Background of the study
Remittances have become a vital source of income for many households in developing regions, contributing significantly to economic sustainability. In Umuahia North Local Government Area, Abia State, remittances from family members working abroad or in urban centers play a crucial role in stabilizing household finances and supporting local economic activities. These funds help families invest in education, healthcare, and small business ventures, thereby fostering long-term economic sustainability (Eze, 2023). Recent research highlights that remittances not only alleviate poverty but also stimulate local consumption and investment, creating a multiplier effect that benefits the broader community (Okoro, 2024). However, the reliance on remittances also poses challenges, such as vulnerability to global economic fluctuations and dependency on external income sources. This study examines the impact of remittances on economic sustainability by analyzing the patterns, uses, and outcomes of these funds in Umuahia North. Utilizing quantitative data from remittance inflows and qualitative insights from beneficiary households, the research aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of how remittances contribute to economic resilience and community development (Umu, 2025). The study also explores policy implications for harnessing remittances to drive sustainable local growth.

Statement of the problem
Households in Umuahia North heavily rely on remittances as a primary source of income, yet this dependency raises concerns about long-term economic sustainability. While remittances provide immediate financial relief, overreliance on these funds can create vulnerabilities in the face of global economic downturns and reduced inflows (Okoro, 2023). Moreover, the unstructured use of remittances often results in suboptimal investment in productive ventures, limiting their potential to drive sustainable development. The lack of formal mechanisms to channel remittances into community development exacerbates these challenges. This study seeks to investigate the extent to which remittances contribute to economic sustainability in Umuahia North, and to identify strategies that can optimize their use for long-term growth (Ikechukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the role of remittances in supporting household economies in Umuahia North.

  2. To analyze the patterns and uses of remittances for sustainable development.

  3. To recommend strategies for optimizing remittance utilization.

Research questions:

  1. How do remittances impact household economic sustainability?

  2. What are the common uses of remittances in Umuahia North?

  3. What strategies can enhance the productive use of remittances?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Remittances significantly improve household economic stability.

  2. Misallocation of remittances limits their impact on sustainable development.

  3. Structured policies can enhance the benefits of remittances.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the crucial role of remittances in promoting economic sustainability in Umuahia North. The insights will help policymakers design initiatives that maximize the developmental impact of remittance inflows. By addressing the challenges of dependency and misallocation, the research contributes to strategies that foster long-term economic resilience and community development (Nwachukwu, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to investigating the impact of remittances on economic sustainability within Umuahia North Local Government Area, Abia State, and does not extend to other regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • Remittances: Funds transferred by migrants to their home communities.

  • Economic sustainability: The ability to maintain stable and productive economic growth over time.

  • Household economy: The combined financial resources and expenditures of a household.
